Financial literacy is often mistaken for a lesson in arithmetic or banking products. In reality, it is about shaping character. In the first of a two-part series MOHAMED JAFFER offers some valuable insights into preparing young minds for financial responsibility.
Character in financial literacy teaches discipline, delayed gratification, responsibility, stewardship and ethical decision-making. For Muslim families, these principles are important practical life skills, and they are deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam.
The Holy Quran reminds believers that wealth is a trust from Allah, not an end in itself. Allah says: ‘Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors.’ (Sura Al Hadid, 57:7)
This verse establishes a fundamental Islamic principle: ownership is ultimately Allah’s, while human beings are entrusted with managing wealth responsibly. Financial education therefore becomes an important part of nurturing children who understand both the privileges and responsibilities that accompany material blessings.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also highlighted the importance of accountability in financial matters. He said: ‘The feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about five things… and about his wealth – how he earned it and how he spent it.’ (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi)
Teaching children about money from an early age therefore equips them not only for financial independence but also for fulfilling their religious obligations with integrity.
Financial experts increasingly warn that many young adults leave school with little understanding of budgeting, saving, investing or responsible borrowing. The consequences are visible in rising household debt, poor savings habits and financial vulnerability. Within Muslim households, parents are uniquely positioned to address this gap by making financial education part of everyday family life.
Start with earning, not entitlement
Children are not born financially responsible; they learn responsible behaviour through repeated experience. One of the earliest and most valuable lessons is understanding that money is earned through effort.
Rather than handing out pocket money on demand, parents can create age-appropriate opportunities for children to work towards earning an income. Simple household responsibilities rewarded with reasonable compensation help establish the relationship between effort and reward.
For example, parents might assign four manageable weekly tasks — washing the family car, thoroughly cleaning a room, helping in the garden and packing groceries — with each task earning R25. Completing all four tasks provides R100 for the month. Parents could then add a 50 per cent ’employer bonus’, increasing the child’s monthly income to R150. Linking the bonus to the quality and consistency of the work introduces another valuable lesson: excellence deserves reward.
Such practical exercises cultivate an understanding that income follows productive effort rather than entitlement. Many adults struggle financially because they learned to spend long before they learned to earn.
Islam places immense value on lawful work. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘No one has ever eaten better food than that earned by the work of his own hands.’ (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Teaching children this principle encourages dignity, self-reliance and respect for honest labour from an early age.
Give every rand a purpose
One of the simplest yet most effective teaching tools is the ‘jar system’. Transparent jars labelled Invest, Save, Spend and Give allow children to physically see how money is allocated.
This visual approach transforms abstract financial concepts into practical habits. Every rand receives a purpose before it is spent, reducing the tendency towards impulsive consumption.
For Muslim families, the Give jar reinforces the importance of sadaqah and prepares children to appreciate the broader social purpose of wealth. They begin to understand that prosperity carries responsibilities towards others.
Allah says: ‘Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and publicly, shall have their reward with their Lord.’ (Sura Al Baqarah, 2:274)
Regular charitable giving nurtures gratitude, compassion and social responsibility alongside sound financial habits.
Teach delayed gratification
Children naturally want immediate rewards. Parents can transform these moments into valuable financial lessons.
If a child wants a toy costing R400, encourage them to treat the purchase as a savings project rather than an immediate desire. Saving R37.50 each month means reaching the target in approximately 11 months.
The process teaches patience, planning and perseverance. More importantly, it demonstrates that worthwhile goals often require consistent effort over time.
Delayed gratification has repeatedly been shown by behavioural research to be one of the strongest predictors of future financial stability. Islam similarly encourages patience and self-restraint in every aspect of life, including financial decisions.
Introduce the power of investing
Once children understand saving, parents can introduce the concept of investing.
A simple family exercise might involve offering a ten per cent monthly return on the contents of the Invest jar. An initial R37.50 grows to R41.25 after one month, R45.38 after two months and almost R50 after three months.
Children quickly become fascinated by the idea that money can grow when managed wisely rather than immediately spent.

This provides an ideal opportunity to explain that Islamic investing is fundamentally different from speculation or interest-based earnings. Wealth should grow through legitimate trade, productive enterprise and risk-sharing that creates genuine economic value.
The Quran declares: ‘Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba.’ (Sura Al Baqarah, 2:275)
Introducing these distinctions early helps children appreciate that financial growth in Islam is inseparable from ethical conduct.
