Die Afhaal is a deeply emotional Cape Muslim wedding practice in which a bride is respectfully fetched from her family home, centring dignity, consent and communal care.

Afhaal is a Cape Muslim word. It comes from Afrikaans and simply denotes ‘to fetch’. In wedding life, Die Afhaal refers to the moment when the bride is respectfully fetched from her family home and escorted to her new marital abode. It is a careful crossing. It centres dignity, consent and care.
I begin by explaining how this article came together. I wrote an initial reflection on Die Afhaal, drawing on memory and experience. I then shared it with friends, elders and community members. I invited comments, corrections and additions.
People responded with history, detail, humour and emotion. I received permission to use their words and ideas. I then wove and synthesised these responses, attributing them fully. This piece is collective in its making.
I also place this article in its political moment. Today, cultural and religious practices are lifted out of the community and turned into social media content. Wedding rituals circulate as reels, clips, clickbait and AI-generated images. Meaning shifts. Context disappears. Ritual becomes spectacle.
This reflects a wider neoliberal logic that treats culture as something to consume. This article offers a different use. It offers cultural meaning in the service of cohesion, solidarity and ethical continuity.
I wrote this piece during the December bridal season, when weddings fill our vacation days. The reflection is also personal, as my son, Saʿeed, married Haadiya. Her Afhaal was led by Hajjah Faldiela Chotia, a former senior high school educator and a respected retired Chief Education Specialist in the Western Cape Education Department. In that moment, Die Afhaal came sharply into focus as a deeply meaningful Cape Muslim practice.
Die Afhaal is one of the most emotional moments in a Cape Muslim wedding. Civic leader Boeta Rashard Davids refers to it in English as ‘taking the bride’. Die Afhaal marks a crossing. A daughter leaves her family home. She begins life with her husband. This moment is quiet. It is heavy. It is tender. It holds sadness and hope together.
Cape Muslim weddings come from long histories. Former principal Boeta Sharan Karriem reminds us that many of our wedding forms trace back to early Indonesian Muslim traditions brought to the Cape centuries ago. Over time, these forms were shaped by local conditions and community life.

What developed is a Cape Muslim way of doing things, rooted in Islam and lived through local culture. Teacher and tailor Karriem Majiet adds an important reminder. He notes that Die Afhaal is not prescribed by Islamic law, but entered Muslim marriage practice as people from different cultures embraced Islam. He recalls that Islam allows such practices as long as they uphold modesty and ethical restraint. For him, Die Afhaal shows how Islam accommodates culture while keeping faith at the centre.
Die Afhaal takes place after the nikāḥ and the wedding reception. It is the moment when the bride leaves her parents’ home and moves towards a shared life with her husband. It is deliberate and solemn. It carries dignity.
Sharifa Daniels, a former Stellenbosch University Writing Lab head, explains that Die Afhaal is planned well in advance of the wedding day. The groom’s family decides who will perform this duty. They formally approach these women and ask them. Being chosen is regarded as a high honour. It signals trust and standing within the family and the community.
The deputation is led by senior hajjahs. Teacher Yusuf Gamieldien recalls that these are women whose authority comes from character rather than ceremony. Education Psychology Emeritus Professor at SU Doria Daniels adds that, in earlier generations, women prepared themselves for this role long in advance. They bought their moederings. They kept their embroidered miedouras and capes. They hoped to one day be called upon to serve.
Sharifa Daniels describes how carefully the hajjahs dress. They often wear miedouras, delicately embroidered scarves brought back from hajj, often from Indonesia. These sometimes become heirlooms passed down through families. In older practice, the hajjahs would enter the venue slowly and with dignity, led by the senior hajjah. The bride’s family would formally receive them and seat them with respect.
When the moment arrives, the senior hajjah approaches the bride and her parents. Doria Daniels recalls that the senior hajjah first informs the parents that the groom has sent them to fetch his wife and asks their permission. The bride herself is then asked directly if she leaves of her own free will.
This moment carries deep ethical weight. It affirms consent, dignity and choice.
The room then becomes quiet. Salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, fills the space. Guests join in softly. Tears follow. They come from the bride. They come from her mother. They come from close family. Yusuf Gamieldien describes this moment as poignant. Sadness and hope sit together.
A stole is placed around the bride’s shoulders. Doria Daniels explains that this is traditionally a fur stole and forms part of the Cape Muslim Afhaal practice, worn regardless of the weather.
Author and coach Rosieda Shabodien recalls how families sometimes adapt this symbol. She and her husband, Ebrahim, decided 37 years ago, in the context of their wedding, to have the hajjahs wrap a Palestinian scarf around her bridal shoulders, which has since become a family tradition. This adaptation carries continuity and ethical conscience together.
Boeta Sharan Karriem brings the moment vividly to life. The bride does not leave alone. She is surrounded by her women — her aunts, sisters and cousins. They escort her. In Cape Town, this often becomes a small convoy of cars.
Advice is offered. Jokes are made. Care is expressed loudly and lovingly. The humour is affectionate. It is protective. It signals that the bride remains held.
Islam does not prescribe a specific fetching ritual. The nikāḥ completes the marriage. Yet, as Karriem Majiet reminds us, practices like Die Afhaal endure because they express respect, responsibility and communal care within the broad ethical space Islam allows.
Restitution activist and Master’s student Moegammad Tahier Kara reminds us that Die Afhaal is often followed by the bruidskamer. On arrival at the groom’s home, close family from both sides gather. A duʿāʾ is offered, usually by an imam or elder. Gentle naṣīḥah (sincere counsel) follows. The presence of both families signals that the marriage is supported and held.
Historian Boeta Ebrahim Rhoda adds an important detail to this sequence. He recalls that before the hajjahs arrive to fetch the bride, the groom usually leaves the venue and goes ahead to the home where the couple will stay. Once the newly married couple are settled in their bridal space, words of advice are offered by the imam or by parents. This completes the movement from public ritual to private responsibility.
Ighsaan Higgins, curator of the Cape Heritage Museum, responded simply that reading about Die Afhaal brought a tear to his eye. His response affirms the deep emotional reach of this practice across generations and social roles.
Shaykh Ismail Keraan, imam of Al-Azhar Masjid in District Six, reflects that Die Afhaal underscores the indispensable role of women in sustaining a community anchored in mercy, justice and adabiyah.
Mentor and friend Shaykh Dr Ridwan Rylands urges that such traditions be treasured as acts carried out in the service of Allah and the community.
Friend Nasser Essop shares that the moment of Afhaal brings him to tears each time. It speaks to his inner fabric: emotional, intellectual and embodied. The sadness deepens the ritual.
Cousin and Grassroots Educare CEO Aunty Mareldia Tape offers quiet advice: that traditions like these fade when they are no longer spoken about, and that they endure when they are lived and narrated.
Two clarifications matter. Many cultural practices formed in times shaped by male dominance. Over time, culture must align sensibly with changing gender realities. Die Afhaal already centres women. Its future — and the future of marital and community life — depends on justice, dignity and centring women’s voices.
This account reflects one Cape Muslim practice. It does not speak for all Muslims. Indian Muslim families, Xhosa and Zulu Muslim families, and newer Muslim migrant communities from across the African continent carry their own adaptations. These differ in form. They share an ethical aim: cohesion, care and solidarity.
Die Afhaal remains a living Cape Muslim practice. It teaches how to let go with care. It teaches how to walk together. It teaches how a community holds sadness and joy at the same time.
In this season of marriage, Die Afhaal reminds us of something simple. Faith lives in practice. Culture lives in people. Meaning lives in care.
