Non-profit organisations (NPOs) are the unsung heroes of our society. They are often relied upon and highly regarded in the under-resourced communities that they serve; helping to unlock access to basic services like education, healthcare, food security and psychosocial support.
With more than 295 000 NPOs registered with the Department of Social Development towards the end of last year, amid an increasingly strained local and global funding landscape, many NPOs grapple with systemic challenges when it comes to accessing sustainable funding for their critical developmental work.
To address this gap, Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA), in partnership with the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative, will host interactive training workshops designed to strengthen the fundraising capacity of professionals working in the local non-profit development sector, as well as to facilitate strategic networking between NPOs and potential funders.
These workshops will be held in Durban on August 2, and in Johannesburg from August 4 to 6, 202. The workshops will be led by Dr Shariq Siddiqui, Assistant Professor of Philanthropic Studies at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
‘Delegates can expect to enhance their practical understanding about ethical and effective fundraising principles; sharpen their abilities to work with volunteers and boards to build skilled fundraising teams; and develop strategic organisational fundraising action plans, says IRSA CEO, Yusuf Mohamed.

Registration costs have been kept as low as possible to ensure that these workshops are accessible to a wide range of NPOs. The one-day workshop in Durban costs R250, and the three-day workshop in Johannesburg costs R500, including meals and refreshments, all course material and certificates.
NPOs that are unable to cover the registration fees are encouraged to email munyaradzi.jani@islamic-relief.org.za to apply for one of 20 sponsored tickets in Durban; or robert.zulu@islamic-relief.org.za to apply for one of 20 sponsored tickets in Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg workshop will conclude with a networking session on August 6 – which is also open to Durban attendees – as an interactive opportunity for corporate and NPO representatives to network, share insights and explore collaborations towards advancing impactful and sustainable development.
There are a limited number of spaces still available. More information and registration links can be found at www.islamic-relief.org.za/sustainable-fundraising-for-non-profits/.
