Women in AI will mark Women’s Month with a community hike from Constantia Nek to De Villiers Dam, offering women in artificial intelligence and technology an informal space to connect, share experiences and build lasting relationships.

Women in AI will host a hike at Constantia Nek on Saturday, August 29, as part of its Women’s Month activities.
The organisation works to increase women’s participation in artificial intelligence through education, research, mentorship and community building. It says women remain underrepresented in artificial intelligence, machine learning and senior technology roles, with some women finding themselves as the only woman in their workplace or team.
Marushka Johannes, Community Engagement Lead, Southern Africa executive team at Women in AI, said the organisation was established to create a supportive local community for women working or interested in artificial intelligence.
Arlene Kemp, the community engagement leader for the Western Cape, will co-lead the hike.
Johannes said the group wanted to move away from the brief, transactional conversations that can happen at conventional networking events.
For Johannes, the appeal is that people can meet away from the usual workplace hierarchy.

“On a mountain trail, everyone is wearing hiking shoes, drinking water and sharing the same path. Junior developers, creative strategists and students walk side by side without corporate barriers,” she said.
She said the organisation hopes the informal setting will encourage conversations and connections that last beyond the hike.
Participants will meet at the Constantia Nek parking area at 7:45am on Saturday, August 29. The hike will start at 8:15am.
The route from Constantia Nek to De Villiers Dam and back is between six and 6.6 kilometres and is expected to take two to three hours. Organisers describe it as a moderate, steady climb.
All fitness levels are welcome.
