As Zionism faces deep global revulsion after Gaza, this analysis argues that Israel’s condemnation of violent West Bank settlers is a political attempt to isolate visible extremism from the wider structures of occupation and dispossession.

There is something almost obscene in watching Benjamin Netanyahu discover that violent settlers are a problem precisely when Zionism itself has become more globally discredited than at almost any moment in its history.
After decades in which settlement expansion became an organising principle of Israeli territorial power, the prime minister has suddenly acquired a delicate sensitivity to lawlessness in the occupied West Bank. Mike Huckabee, one of America’s most zealous champions of Zionist territorial maximalism, has gone further, describing violent settlers as “terrorists.” Western politicians who spent years treating Palestinian dispossession as invisible, regrettable or eternally “complicated” have likewise discovered a moral vocabulary.
The timing is not incidental. It is the whole story.
After Gaza, Zionism is confronting a historic collapse in global standing. Israel’s orgy of genocidal violence since October 2023 has transformed its international image. Across enormous sections of world opinion, Israel is increasingly associated not with refuge, democracy or victimhood but with occupation, apartheid, mass murder and impunity.
The old mythology has haemorrhaged credibility.
And suddenly everyone has discovered the extremist settler.
What a coincidence.
The condemnations perform an indispensable political function at precisely the moment Zionism most desperately requires rehabilitation: isolate the ugliest visible actor so the larger project can be rescued from the moral and political wreckage surrounding it.
Condemn the hooligan. Disinfect the ideology. Sacrifice the settler. Rescue the settler-colonial state.
A masked Israeli attacks a Palestinian family, torches property, assaults journalists or drives villagers from their land, and suddenly the language becomes thrillingly muscular: “extremist,” “rioter,” “terrorist.” Yet the machinery surrounding him — land seizures, military protection, segregated legal structures, settlement roads, expanding outposts, demolitions and fragmentation of Palestinian territory — remains safely outside the indictment.
That separation is the fraud.
The violent settler is not some exotic tumour on an otherwise innocent political body. He is a crude expression of a territorial order built through Palestinian displacement, dispossession and domination. Zionist state-building did not unfold across empty geography. Israel’s creation was inseparable from the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948; refugee return was blocked; military occupation followed in 1967; settlement expanded; and a system emerged that major human-rights organisations and international experts have described through the language of apartheid, and now of genocide.
The settler does not negate this history.

That is why he is so politically dangerous now. Zionism is facing profound global revulsion, and the West Bank settler threatens to make that damage durable. Israel’s defenders desperately need Gaza to remain one tragedy, occupation another, settlements another, settler violence another — separate compartments surrounding an allegedly respectable political centre.
The settler ruins the architecture.
He connects the pieces.
The recent assault on an NBC News crew exposed the mechanism perfectly. Masked attackers descended on journalists interviewing a Palestinian woman whose home she said settlers had taken over. The woman was beaten unconscious. Because Western journalists themselves became victims, violence Palestinians had described for years suddenly acquired urgency.
The violence had not changed.
The audience had.
The attackers committed the cardinal sin of colonial politics: they made the machinery visible to people whose bruises register in Washington.
Netanyahu condemned them. Huckabee denounced them. Israel’s defenders rushed to construct a quarantine wall between respectable Zionism and its supposedly aberrant frontier thugs.
But settlers do not drift onto occupied land like pollen. They inhabit communities built, armed, serviced and defended within an architecture sustained by the Israeli state. Roads do not pave themselves. Outposts do not electrify themselves. Military zones do not appear by magic. Palestinian homes do not demolish themselves. Land does not mysteriously migrate from one population to another.
The settler may swing the club; the state constructs the world in which the club has territorial meaning.
This is why Netanyahu’s complaint that settler violence damages Israel’s international standing is so revealing. At a moment when that standing has already been devastated by Gaza, the injury is overwhelmingly reputational.
The settler’s offence is that he makes the project look like the project.
He converts “facts on the ground” into dispossession, “security” into coercion, “settlement growth” into territorial conquest. He takes bureaucratic nouns and supplies their verbs: seize, expel, destroy.
That is intolerable when Zionism is trying to claw back the moral authority Gaza has demolished.
The “extremist settler” therefore becomes Zionism’s designated sinner. Onto him can be dumped racism, fanaticism, illegality and brutality, leaving the broader ideological structure scrubbed for renewed Western consumption.
Netanyahu condemns the rioter. Huckabee discovers terrorism. Liberal politicians rediscover international law in carefully measured teaspoons. Editorial pages shake their heads at settlers as though hundreds of thousands of Israelis somehow wandered into occupied territory during a spectacularly confusing hiking expedition.
The objective is clear: prevent Gaza and the West Bank from becoming a single indictment.
Because once the Gaza genocide connects to occupation, occupation to settlement, settlement to dispossession, dispossession to state policy and state policy to Zionist territorial ideology, the fairy tale of “extremists” surrounding a moderate centre becomes almost impossible to sell.
That is the panic beneath the condemnations.
At perhaps Zionism’s most globally reviled moment, the settler must become the scapegoat through whom the larger project seeks absolution. He must absorb the ugliness so the system can pose as salvageable; become the fanatic so the ideology can masquerade as moderation; become the exception so the structure can escape judgment.
But this is where the rescue operation fails.
The settler’s real political crime is not that he betrays the system. It is that he destroys the distinction between the system and its violence.
He does not merely embarrass Zionism. He exposes the logic its defenders are trying to quarantine.
After Gaza, that exposure is no longer a public-relations problem that can be solved by condemning a few men on a hilltop.
It is the indictment.
