In a targeted engagement aimed at youth development and mentorship, Member of Parliament (MP) Imraan Ismail-Moosa visited the learners of Cape Town Islamic Educational Institute’s (CTIEC) Zia ul Uloom and Zia ul Banaat in Eagle Park on Wednesday October 22.
The visit was strategically focused on providing guidance and empowerment to students, stressing the enduring value of continued academic pursuit and the cultivation of respect and decorum towards educational faculty.
MP Ismail-Moosa delivered a key address, offering life advice and sharing his personal trajectory, detailing his growth and eventual ascent to his current parliamentary role. This narrative functioned as a practical case study, designed to illustrate the tangible outcomes of perseverance and dedicated service.
The MP, who represents Al Jama-ah in the National Assembly, was formally welcomed by the Principal of CTIEC, Hazrat Moulana Sayed Imraan Ziyaee, the CTIEC educators, and the members from the Cape Town Ulama Board.
The collaboration between political leadership and community-based educational and spiritual institutions was a central theme of the event.
Ismail-Moosa’s professional history serves as a significant case study in community upliftment. His political journey is framed not merely as a progression of status, but as a commitment to the philosophy of servant leadership, a principle he identifies as crucial for navigating contemporary and future societal challenges. Ismail-Moosa asserted that the function of all leadership is to embody this principle. For him, the dedication to community that began in Lenasia continues with renewed vigour in Parliament, underscoring the proposition that principled commitment is a potent catalyst for socio-political change.

A significant component of the engagement involved substantive discussions between the Cape Town Ulama Board and the CTIEC leadership with the MP on issues directly affecting the youth of the Cape Flats. These dialogues focused on exploring challenges and potential policy interventions relevant to this critical demographic.

The learners expressed genuine appreciation for the MP’s visit, noting the distinction of a high-status political figure dedicating time to their institutions. As one learner articulated, political engagement often prioritises large scale or high-profile events and constituencies, making direct interaction with ‘regular’ community schools a rare and highly valued occurrence.
MP Ismail-Moosa’s visit was particularly significant as it provided a crucial, positive counter narrative to the prevalent media focus on the Cape Flats, which often centres on issues of substance abuse and gang-related activities. In an environment frequently overshadowed by reports of social pathology, the direct engagement of a national political figure served as a powerful validation of institutions like CTIEC, which are dedicated to fostering educational and moral capital within the local community.
MP Ismail-Moosa acknowledged CTIEC for its substantial contribution to educational provision and spiritual growth within the Cape community. He specifically commended the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the principal and staff in their vital work. His presence underscored a vital truth: the Cape Flats is also defined by proactive agents of change and institutions working toward positive community development and resilience, a fact that warrants significant recognition from public figures and the media alike.
