THE ezDebt Al-Ikhlaas Academia Library, in collaboration with SPAR MG, is hosting a charity golf tournament on Tuesday, September 24, at the Rondebosch Golf Club. Golfers tee off at 11:30am and the aim is to raise essential funds for the library’s continued operation.
Dr Elias Parker, chairperson of the Board of Trust of Academia Library, said that this is the first major fund raiser since the onset of Covid-19.
‘The Academia Library is an off shoot of the Islamic Library which is about 36 years old. When we decided to modernise the library into this, we had the Cape Town Big Walk as a major fundraiser and needless to say that the walk came to an abrupt end with Covid-19. The walk was very successful which saw to the sustainability of the both libraries and also enabled us to put together a project of this kind.
‘We were closed for about 18 months after Covid-19 and faced many challenges as it was a major task to find donors and funding since then. We have been running on reserve, so this is the first major fundraiser and hope that it will be successful or this facility will succumb to the modern day challenges we experiencing.
‘In the past, sponsors have been supporting us but times are tough and we cannot knock on the same doors, hence we came up with the golf day. It’s out first major fundraiser since 2019 and I really would like the local golfers and businesses to support this day. We want to keep this facility going. It’s a library for all; it helps uplift our community.

‘There’s been a lot going on in the last year or so, to the extent where we’ve had programmes for pre-school kids. We are just about to launch our library programme and have other projects going on as well so we need to sustain the core function of the library,’ he added.
The tournament will follow a 4-ball better ball Stapleford format, with an entry fee of R600 per player. This fee includes a goodie bag and dinner, with numerous prizes available on the day.
