For Mountview, golf has always been more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for community, tradition and personal growth.

Mountview Golf Club, founded in 1986, has grown into a proud symbol of camaraderie and philanthropy in Cape Town’s golfing community.
Its origins can be traced back to a pivotal split within the Mitchell Plain Golf Club, leading to the formation of two new groups: the Cape Peninsula Golf Club in 1985 and the Islamic Welfare Trust. The Islamic Welfare Trust, along with a group of social golfers known as the Mountain View Golf Group, united in 1986, laying the foundation for what would become Mountview Golf Club.
Official records began, and the club appointed its first chairman, the late Mr Ebrahim Osman. Recognised founding members include Rashaad Emandien, Muchsin Salie, Hardie Abrahams, Herbie Abrahams, Abduragmaan ‘Manie’ Price and Salie Hendricks, each integral to shaping Mountview’s early culture.
In 1994, the club welcomed another wave of passionate golfers with the merging of the Charity Club, reinforcing Mountview’s commitment to charitable work. By 1996, the club officially renamed itself Mountview Charity Golf Club, embodying its dual purpose of fostering a competitive spirit in golf while actively giving back to the community. The club’s evolution continued in 2002 when it became an affiliated society of Parow Golf Club, providing members with a home course and the chance to hold accredited golf handicaps. Finally, in 2005, the club streamlined its identity to simply Mountview Golf Club.
For nearly two decades, Mountview held regular golf days dedicated to raising funds for local charities. On average, the club organised five to eight fundraising golf days annually, raising over 7.5 million Rand for deserving causes. Though the scale of fundraising activities reduced in 2017, Mountview’s legacy of philanthropy endures through the Boebie Schloss Memorial Fundraiser, an annual event that honours the memory of the late Chairman while supporting charitable efforts.

The club’s competitive spirit and structure have been integral to its members’ growth and accomplishments. Various tournaments, such as the Currie Cup, Partners League and Chairman’s Cup, have created a platform for members to excel in the sport. Mountview has produced several club champions over the years, with Trevor Smith famously clinching the title an impressive eight times between 2004 and 2017.
Additionally, inter-club challenges with teams like Different Strokes, Oasis and Strand Seagulls, as well as landmark events like the Mountview Classic Challenge, established Mountview’s reputation for sportsmanship and skill. In more recent years, club tours such as the Garden Route Tour, West Coast Team Challenge and Whale Coast Tour have kept the tradition of friendly competition alive.
In 2011, Mountview launched the Mountview Junior Academy, marking a milestone in its dedication to developing young talent. Although the academy paused operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, it left a lasting impact, with graduates like Jaden Visagie and Mitch Phigeland now representing Western Province in provincial competitions. Phigeland was called up into GolfRSA’s elite national squad earlier this year.
Mountview’s commitment to nurturing talent is further exemplified by prominent members such as Trevor Smith, Brian Mampies, Salie Adams, AB Price, and Soraya Jeppie, who went on to represent Western Province.
Mountview’s influence extends beyond the golf course through its leadership and administrative accomplishments.
Past chairman Boebie Schloss served as Captain and President of Parow Golf Club, with others like Naadir Agherdien taking on significant roles in South African golf administration. Agherdien, a past chairman of Mountview, advanced to serve as President of Western Province Golf in 2013 and later as President of the South African Golf Union in 2019. His career highlights include receiving Protea colours as a manager of international golf squads, representing Mountview on both national and continental stages, and earning accreditation as an international tournament referee by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A) in St. Andrews, Scotland.
As the club celebrates 38 years, it honours the values of care, respect, transparency, camaraderie and integrity, principles instilled by its past leaders and embraced by every member. The club’s lineage of chairmen, from Ebrahim Osman’s pioneering leadership to Khalil Mukuddem’s current stewardship, has shaped a legacy of resilience and unity. Likewise, the dedicated captains, beginning with Hardie Abrahams and Rashaad Emandien in the early years, have inspired generations of golfers to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
For Mountview, golf has always been more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for community, tradition and personal growth. The club remains committed to preserving these values, honouring past members through the Memorial Cup, and encouraging a new generation to carry forward its proud legacy. As Mountview looks to the future, it does so with a deep appreciation for its past and an unwavering dedication to the values that have sustained it for nearly four decades.
