This profound and insightful work by Yumnah Jones is woven as a tapestry of life, deeply anchored in the spirituality of Bo-Kaap, District Six and Walmer Estate. The narrative captures both sorrow and joy, bearing powerful testimony to the resilience of the Cape Malay people. I am honoured to write this review and commend the author for taking readers on a journey back to childhood – one that immerses us in a historically vibrant and culturally rich heritage.
The loving warmth of family life is vividly portrayed through the emotional weight of the Covenant of Alastu, a divine contract referenced in the Qur’an. This concept suggests that while apartheid and colonisation sought to fracture communities and dismantle togetherness, humanity’s innate purity and its primordial agreement with God, Allah, remain the true path to fulfilment and inner peace.
This review explores how the author skilfully depicts the complex and brutal legacy of family fragmentation caused by the Group Areas Act and the forced removals to the Southern Suburbs and beyond. The book’s emotional and philosophical depth is further enriched by the use of kombuis Afrikaans, which serves as the linguistic soul of the community. Expressions such as ‘Kassie vir Allah’ (Thanks to Allah) ground the narrative in lived experience. The author enhances accessibility by including a glossary of Islamic terms, while chapter synopses support an engaging and fluid reading experience.
The Echoes of Alastu follows young Ameer and Natheerah during their winter holidays with their grandparents in Bo-Kaap. During this time, they are introduced to their rich Cape Malay heritage, Islamic faith and individual destinies. These formative experiences guide Ameer towards pursuing religious studies, while Natheerah discovers her entrepreneurial spirit alongside a hidden spiritual gift.
The author’s approach to life reveals a clear mystical insight, particularly through the wisdom and guidance of the grandmother, Aysa. As she shares her lineage connected to Mariam Russo, the narrative illustrates the ripple effect of a woman who used her spiritual gifts in service of her community – gifts that are later passed on to her granddaughter, Natheerah.
The book culminates in a historical narrative held together by the unifying force of family. It is enriched by the timeless wisdom of the grandfather, Ustaadh Ebrahim Noordien, whose reminder to ‘never forget your deen’ underscores the importance of making choices aligned with Allah’s commands. He emphasises that every decision carries consequences that shape the heart and one’s spiritual journey.
Ameer and Natheerah are profoundly affected by the sudden death of their neighbour, Muneeb, in a car accident. This tragic event serves as a catalyst for reflection on the transient nature of life, reinforcing the enduring message that ‘death is the only guarantee in life’.
