IN a world increasingly fractured by injustice, the #Week4Palestine (#W4P) initiative stands as a beacon of hope and resistance.
Scheduled from May 1 to 7, 2025, this annual global event unites over 100 organisations across South Africa and beyond to advocate for the liberation, justice, and equality of the Palestinian people.
This year’s campaign, centred on the powerful ‘Red Card Israel’ theme, harnesses the universal language of sports to demand accountability for Israel’s violations of international law and to amplify the Palestinian struggle.
The choice of a sports boycott as the focal point for #W4P 2025 is both strategic and symbolic. Sports, often seen as a unifying force, has historically played a pivotal role in challenging oppression – from the anti-Apartheid boycotts of South Africa to the ongoing calls for justice in Palestine.
Despite FIFA’s guidelines, Israeli clubs and the national team continue to compete in international tournaments, effectively normalising Israel’s policies of occupation, forced displacement, and what many describe as genocide in Gaza. The Red Card Israel campaign seeks to disrupt this status quo by urging FIFA to suspend Israeli teams, sending a clear message: there can be no ‘business as usual’ while Palestinian rights are trampled.
#W4P is more than a campaign; it is a platform for collective action. From rallies and marches to educational workshops, cultural performances, and community-driven sports matches, the week-long programme is designed to unite, educate, and inspire.
Film screenings and panel discussions will shed light on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where a de facto starvation policy and relentless bombardment have created unimaginable suffering. Community outreach initiatives will forge alliances with other social justice movements, reminding us that the fight for Palestinian liberation is inseparable from the global struggle against apartheid and oppression.
At its core, #W4P 2025 is a call to action for organisations and individuals to endorse the #Week4Palestine pledge – a commitment to stand in solidarity with Palestinians, demand an end to the genocide, and support efforts at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold Israel accountable.
By endorsing #W4P, organisations align themselves with a movement that refuses to ignore the illegal settlement expansion, forced demographic changes, and systemic human rights abuses that define the Palestinian experience.

The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the world’s eyes will turn to sports, making the Red Card Israel campaign a critical opportunity to elevate the Palestinian cause on a global stage.
The participation of every organisation, community, and individual in #W4P 2025 will amplify the voices of the oppressed and push for a future where justice is not a distant dream but a lived reality.
The Palestinian struggle is a litmus test for our collective commitment to a world free from oppression. By joining #Week4Palestine, we affirm that solidarity is not just a gesture but a responsibility. Let us rally, educate, and act – because a red card for Israel is a green light for justice.
