THE Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) calls on the public to donate blood this September with their Heritage month theme of ‘Giving is in My Blood’.
In keeping with the spirit of giving and Heritage Month, each donor who successfully donates a unit of blood will receive a South African themed heart-shaped photo magnet as a token of appreciation when they successfully donate.
‘Thank you to all our Western Cape Blood donors for bracing the call during winter to ensure that we have enough blood stock. We would like to appeal to you to keep donating blood as we enter spring,’ declared WCBS Head of Marketing & Public Relations, Michelle Vermeulen.
Further outlining the choice of the theme, Bongiwe Sipunzi, WCBS Public Relations Practitioner, said: ‘With this campaign, we aim to emphasise the impact of giving and showcase how a single act of blood donation can be the most precious gift one can offer.
‘As we celebrate Heritage month and reflect on our culture, values and traditions, we want to inspire a sense of belonging and heritage. Blood donation plays a significant role in our community, and it is truly the gift that keeps on giving.’
The WCBS calls on the public to embrace the true essence of giving by donating blood.
About the blood donation process
Donors begin with a confidential questionnaire and verify their details. A fingerpick test checks your haemoglobin level, ensuring it meets the required 12.5g/dl for women and 13.5g/dl for men. A professional nurse conducts a medical screening, checking your blood pressure and pulse. Donors then proceed to donate a unit of life-saving blood, followed with delicious juice and biscuits to refuel lost fluids.
Basic donor criteria:
- Age between 16 and 75 years
- Weigh at least 50kg or more
- Be in good general health
- Live a safe sexual lifestyle
Donors are also advised to eat a meal three to fours hours before donating and to stay well-hydrated before, during and after the donation.
