Every Friday, a group of activists gather in Johannesburg to picket against apartheid Israel. FEROZ SHAIK reports.
EVERY Friday afternoon, a dedicated group of activists gather on the corner of Oxford and Glenhove Roads in Rosebank, Johannesburg to take a powerful stand against apartheid Israel.
Organized by the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance (PSA) and PSA Youth League, this weekly picket at the intersection becomes a vibrant sea of flags, posters, and passionate voices from 16h00 to 17h00 with participants holding signs condemning the atrocities committed against Palestinians, calling for justice and equality.
The location is strategic as it is positioned opposite McDonald’s,Coke and Standard Bank, symbols of corporations tied to Israel’s funding of the ongoing oppression.The picket aims to raise awareness among passersby. As cars stop at the traffic lights, drivers and passengers are confronted with the stark reality of Palestinian suffering.
Despite the occasional presence of security vans, the picket proceeds smoothly, fueled by unwavering determination by the attendees who gather with warm energy and camaraderie.
