The Jewish Report article frames the entire protest movement as an antisemitic assault. This is neither fair nor honest journalism. It’s a distortion that lumps legitimate protest together with vile hate speech, erasing critical distinctions and discrediting a lawful campaign.

Something dangerous happens when ‘journalism’ stops asking questions and starts acting as a megaphone for one side of a story.
It’s precisely this danger we confront in the June 26, 2025 article published by the Jewish Report titled ‘Cape Jewish leader sues after life threatened’.
At first glance, the headline sounds dramatic, urgent, and newsworthy. But it’s also misleading by highlighting an unproven claim that the owner of Cape Union Mart, Philip Krawitz’s life, has been threatened and is mysteriously linked to regular protests at his stores. The protests, led by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), are part of a campaign against Krawitz’s decades long support for the Zionist Israeli government that has been conducting a genocide against the native people of Palestine over several decades. It suggests that the very act of protest outside Cape Union Mart stores is somehow synonymous with life-threatening violence against Phillip Krawitz, the company’s executive chairperson. It collapses legitimate political dissent into a single narrative of antisemitic violence, without clear evidence to support such a sweeping claim.
The reality is more complex—and far less convenient for those who wish to shield certain interests from public scrutiny.
Across multiple reports, including reports Muslim Views, it has been revealed that the protests against Cape Union Mart stem from political objections to Israel’s conduct in Gaza and fall squarely into the realm of constitutionally protected freedoms: the rights to assemble, to express political views, and to engage in peaceful consumer boycotts.
Instead, the Jewish Report article frames the entire protest movement as an antisemitic assault. This is neither fair nor honest journalism. It’s a distortion that lumps legitimate protest together with vile hate speech, erasing critical distinctions and discrediting a lawful campaign.
Consider the headline’s emotional weight: ‘Cape Jewish leader sues after life threatened.’ It offers no nuance. It omits any mention of the nature of the protest, the political context, or the separate factual disputes over the alleged threats to Krawitz’s life. It leads the reader to presume that peaceful protesters and would-be assassins are one and the same. That is an abdication of journalistic duty to inform with precision and fairness.
Equally troubling is the article’s liberal use of quotes, many of which lack proper attribution. Phrases like ‘credible information of a planned hit’ are presented as fact without identifying the precise sources or showing documentary evidence from official investigations. Readers are left to accept these claims at face value, while critical voices who challenge them remain conspicuously absent.
This raises profound ethical concerns. Journalism is not simply about repeating what one person alleges—especially not when those allegations carry the explosive charge of terrorism or assassination plots. A responsible journalist probes further. Who exactly in the Hawks gave this warning? Was it documented in writing? Was the threat linked specifically to the protesters, or to other criminal dynamics unrelated to political activism? These questions are absent from the Jewish Report’s article.
By contrast, independent reporting has documented police sources who insist that while protests did take place, no credible link was established between the activists and any assassination plot against Krawitz. Security assessments reportedly concluded that the threats cited were rooted in unrelated criminal concerns. Yet none of this context finds its way into the Jewish Report’s story. This omission leaves the reader with a skewed and frightening narrative in which dissenters and peaceful protesters are potential killers with influence over and links to murderous antisemitic assassins.
This lack of balance is not merely an oversight—it actively harms public discourse. In South Africa’s constitutional democracy, the rights to protest, to speak critically about governments or companies, and to advocate for political causes, even controversial ones, are fundamental. The law rightly protects these freedoms unless speech crosses the clear legal lines into direct incitement of violence or hate speech.
Moreover, the article devotes significant space to Krawitz’s assertions of personal and financial harm while virtually ignoring the protesters’ own statements and reasons for their actions. There’s no serious engagement with why people are calling for a boycott, no exploration of evidence or counter-evidence. It’s as though the protesters’ side of the story doesn’t exist.
Journalists carry profound responsibility. They must present news in context, ensure accuracy, avoid misleading headlines, and reflect the diversity of perspectives, especially on issues as sensitive as religious identity and political conflict. It is this commitment to balance and integrity that earns public trust.
The Jewish Report article fails these basic tests. It is a story built on dramatic claims, lacking proper corroboration and absent critical voices that might offer balance. Its headline is sensational but incomplete. Its quotes float without anchors of verification. Its framing converts a lawful protest into an ominous threat against Jewish lives, without any evidence to justify such a claim.
It is evident that the reporter, Tali Feinberg, and the Jewish Report have simply added their weight and influence within the Jewish community to serve a dual purpose, namely, to incite fear and political paranoia and support for Krawitz’s efforts to obtain an interdict from the Cape High Court to stop the PSC’s lawful and peaceful protests at his stores. In doing so the Jewish Report is attacking South Africa’s constitutionally enshrined right to protest and entrenching Zionist Jews’ false belief that they are a persecuted and threatened minority here.

The Jewish Report has gone further by unfairly naming an individual protester cited as a respondent in Krawitz and Cape Union Mart’s court interdict application despite the matter obviously being sub-judice. Somehow the protester is thereby linked to a criminal plot to assassinate Krawitz. Mention of the name of the protester, her place of work, alleged use of antisemitic posters in the Jewish Report’s lead article is deliberate, irresponsible and unethical. It threatens the named individual’s good reputation, livelihood and future life prospects.
The PSC demands a public and published retraction and apology for this crude propaganda.
The PSC was formed as part of an initiative of the World Conference Against Racism in 2001 and as a secular initiative to promote the Palestinian cause in South Africa and to lead an international anti-apartheid movement against Apartheid Israel.
