Founder of Dusha Moya, Maleehah Cosyn, says the organisation’s latest campaign, Janan, reflects its deep connection to the heart and soul — both in meaning and mission.
‘Janan means heart and soul, which is the same or similar to the NPO’s name Dusha Moya,’ she explains. ‘Moya means “my”. The mission and significance behind Dusha Moya and the Janan campaign is that whatever we do, it starts with intention — for the pleasure of Allah. The reward of doing good is twofold: reward in the aakhira and internal happiness and reward in the dunya as well.’
The campaign’s motivation, she says, stems from both pain and pleasure.
‘Pain, from seeing so many unable to perform Hajj because of the cost of living and not being by the means,’ says Cosyn. ‘Pleasure, because Umrah is attainable — it’s more cost-effective yet still deeply rewarding. If someone can get to experience an opportunity they thought would never happen, yet there they are saying Labaik Allahumma Labaik — that is priceless.’
The organisation is preparing for its upcoming Gala Dinner Fundraiser, taking place on Friday, October 31, at Ghousia Manzil – La Elegante Caterers in Rylands. The evening aims to raise funds to sponsor Umrah trips for those who cannot afford to go.
‘We’re hoping that all tickets sold will cover tickets for two underprivileged individuals,’ Cosyn says.
According to Cosyn, the selection process for beneficiaries began last year.
‘Some people sent in emails nominating individuals, but I believe Allah places the right people in your path and is the best of planners,’ she adds.
As of now, 30 tickets remain available.
‘People can contact myself or my brother. No tickets will be sold on the day of the event as it is a catered event.’

Reflecting on the spiritual foundation of the campaign, Cosyn notes that islaah (reformation) is deeply connected to one’s heart and soul.
‘As mentioned before, any action we want to take starts with intention — for the pleasure of Allah. When we do anything for the pleasure of Allah, the reward and outcome can only bring khayr (goodness).’
However, she admits that gaining support for the campaign has not been easy.
‘I’ve gone to so many businesses that I supported for years. Yet when I reached out to them for assistance — not money, just to ask if they’d like to donate a ticket or two — I was told, “For Umrah? No.” Another businessman even said sarcastically, “I don’t think it’s a worthy cause. People need to go and work”.’
Despite these discouraging responses, Cosyn remains steadfast.
‘Even today, I phoned around and went to places where I’d left letters of sponsorship and posters. Some didn’t even bother to read or put them up. It costs money, time, and petrol, but I learnt a lot, Alhamdulillah.’
Her message to the community is one of compassion and simplicity.
‘Support is as simple as sharing with friends and family. It’s as simple as wanting for the next person what you want for yourself. It’s as simple as “how can I help?”’
Through Janan, Dusha Moya aims to embody that very spirit — transforming small acts of kindness into life-changing journeys.
