AWQAF SA, in association with the Western Cape Education Department, will be hosting a series of maths workshops to prepare learners for their maths examinations.
This intervention will target learners in Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats challenged with the costs associated with travelling to the venues in the southern suburbs where we have traditionally hosted these workshops.
Awqaf SA is a charitable community organisation whose downstream projects in social cohesion, health and education provide a means to uplift marginalised communities.
Awqaf SA’s CEO, Mickaeel Collier, stated: ‘We have realised that maths is an essential subject required for careers in engineering, finance, computer science and further life skills. This project fills a gap where learners struggle with the subject.’
Since 2016, this maths intervention’s impact on thousands of learners has assisted them to reach their full potential. Last year, Rorisang Matimba, a past grade 12 participant, scored 100 percent in his final maths exam and is currently studying Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Over the years, there has been an observable and marked improvement in learners results because of attending these workshops, which are hosted annually in May in preparation for the June exam; in August in preparation for the mock exams; and in October before the final exam.
Educators who have incorporated these workshops into their teaching programmes have testified to the benefits for their learners.
These sessions are hosted in a hybrid format. Up to 500 learners are taught in person, and a broader online audience of up to 13 000 learners from across South Africa joins via Awqaf SA’s YouTube and Tik Tok platforms. Thus far this programme has assisted up to 100 000 learners.
This month we will be hosting a workshop for grades 10, 11 and 12.
These sessions are free. Online registration is essential to confirm attendance. Those intending to attend the session online will receive the stream links upon successful registration.
