New research suggests Israel is confronting an unprecedented wave of international isolation. MAHMOOD SANGLAY analyses four independent studies showing how financial markets, consumer behaviour, public opinion and diplomacy are reinforcing one another.
From stock exchanges to supermarket shelves, and from diplomatic corridors to shifting public opinion, there is growing global recognition that Israel’s actions in Gaza are carrying mounting political and economic consequences.
For decades, Israel’s international standing was measured largely through diplomatic alliances and military partnerships. Four recently published academic studies now suggest that the picture has changed dramatically. Examining financial markets, consumer behaviour, banking systems and US foreign policy, the studies independently reach a strikingly similar conclusion: since the escalation of the Gaza genocide in October 2023, Israel has become increasingly isolated across multiple fronts, with each trend reinforcing the others.
Rather than describing isolated developments, the research points to a broader pattern. Financial markets, multinational corporations, consumers and governments are responding differently to the genocide, but with similar consequences. Together, these responses form a self-reinforcing cycle of international pressure.
One of the clearest signs comes from global financial markets.
A study published in Cogent Economics & Finance analysed 1 115 listed banking institutions across developed, emerging and frontier markets following the outbreak of Israel’s genocide. It found that banking shares generally recorded negative market reactions immediately after the conflict escalated, reflecting growing investor concern over geopolitical instability. The sharpest declines occurred in developed markets, whose banking systems are more integrated into the global financial system and therefore more exposed to international shocks.
The researchers argue that geopolitical conflict has become more than a regional security issue. It is now a financial risk capable of influencing investor confidence, capital flows and banking stability across continents. Markets increasingly view prolonged instability surrounding Israel as a source of economic uncertainty rather than simply a political event.
A second study, published in the American Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Research, reached a similar conclusion from another angle.
Researchers examined companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange that were affiliated with Israel, including firms selling brands such as Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut, Nestlé, Unilever and Hewlett-Packard products. Although average returns before and after the conflict showed little overall difference, investors reacted noticeably during key stages of the conflict, indicating that markets quickly priced in geopolitical developments and boycott-related concerns. The researchers concluded that the conflict negatively influenced investor sentiment towards Israel-linked companies.
These two studies suggest a significant shift. Investors increasingly regard geopolitical risk associated with Israel as an economic factor requiring financial adjustment rather than merely a diplomatic concern. The economic pressure extends beyond financial markets. Consumer behaviour is emerging as another powerful force.
A study published in Al-Sharf Jurnal Ekonomi Islam investigated what motivates Gen Z Muslims in Indonesia to boycott Unilever products associated with Israel. Surveying 110 Muslim respondents in Semarang, researchers found that positive attitudes towards boycotts, social influence, confidence in finding alternatives and religious guidance all significantly strengthened consumers’ intention to avoid Unilever products.
The study highlights the influence of Indonesia’s Ulama Council Fatwa, which urges Muslims to support the Palestinian cause and avoid products affiliated with Israel. According to the researchers, this religious guidance substantially reinforced boycott intentions, demonstrating that consumer activism is increasingly driven by both ethical conviction and religious commitment.
The demographic profile is equally significant. Gen Z—the first truly digital generation—has become one of the driving forces behind international boycott campaigns. Data cited in the study indicate that nearly three-quarters of young Indonesians have participated in boycotts of products perceived to support Israel, illustrating how social media has accelerated consumer mobilisation across borders.
The fourth study broadens the picture beyond economics by asking a more fundamental question: is Israel’s close relationship with the United States still advancing American interests?
Writing in the Journal of Media & Management, Palestinian researcher Awad Slimia argues that Washington’s longstanding support for Israel is becoming increasingly costly politically, economically and diplomatically. Rather than strengthening America’s position in the Middle East, the paper contends that unconditional support for Israel is eroding US credibility, damaging its international standing and placing it at odds with both global public opinion and international law.
The study points to growing evidence that American opinion is shifting. Drawing on Gallup and other major surveys, it notes declining approval of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, particularly among younger Americans and Democrats. Support for an immediate ceasefire has risen sharply, while increasing numbers of Americans favour a more balanced US policy that includes recognition of a Palestinian state.

The paper also argues that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated diplomatically. It highlights growing international support for Palestinian statehood and notes that several longstanding US allies have moved towards recognising the State of Palestine or openly backing renewed efforts to implement a two-state solution. Investors are reassessing companies perceived to have Israeli links. Governments and publics are increasingly questioning longstanding diplomatic positions. Each development reinforces the others.
The result is that Israel’s international isolation is no longer confined to diplomatic disputes or political activism. It is increasingly visible in capital markets, corporate boardrooms, supermarket purchasing decisions and international strategic calculations.
For businesses, this has important implications. Companies operating internationally are discovering that geopolitical events can rapidly affect consumer confidence, investor sentiment and corporate reputation. Commercial decisions are increasingly being judged not only on financial performance but also on ethical considerations, particularly where human rights and armed conflict are concerned.
For investors, the studies reinforce another lesson: geopolitical developments have become material financial risks. Banking shares, multinational corporations and consumer-facing brands can all come under pressure when conflict reshapes public opinion and purchasing behaviour.
For Islamic finance, the findings are especially significant. The industry has long maintained that financial decisions cannot be separated from ethics, accountability and social responsibility. These four studies suggest those principles are increasingly influencing behaviour far beyond Muslim markets. Consumers, investors and institutions alike are paying closer attention to how commercial activity intersects with humanitarian concerns, public values and international justice.
Whether viewed through financial markets, consumer activism, corporate performance or diplomacy, the overall picture is remarkably consistent.
Although each study was conducted independently and within a different academic discipline, all point to the same conclusion: since the escalation of the Gaza genocide in October 2023, Israel has faced growing international isolation that extends well beyond conventional politics.
