For years, the global propaganda machine engineered by US imperial interests and Zionist supremacy has attempted to pigeonhole support for Palestine as a ‘Muslim issue’. They want the public to believe that the outcry for Gaza is a sectarian ‘Jihadist’ agenda, using these labels as a psychological weapon to build a wall of fear.
The goal is simple: if you can frame the struggle for human rights as a ‘Muslim takeover’, you can justify any level of depravity in the name of ‘security’. But that narrative was shattered by the physical and moral presence of activist Pastor Nigel Branken.
The myth of the ‘Muslim threat’
The Zionist agenda relies on the ‘othering’ of Palestinian solidarity. By painting supporters with a ‘pro-Jihadist’ brush, they seek to trigger Islamophobic reflexes worldwide. This isn’t just about religion; it is a calculated tool of empire. If you can convince the world that those demanding an end to the slaughter are ‘radicals’, you can successfully dehumanise the victims and silence their allies.

However, when a Christian leader stands before the political elite and demands accountability, the ‘Jihad’ label fails. It reveals the struggle for what it truly is: a universal, anti-colonial movement against a system that views some lives as ‘civilised’ and others as expendable.
When Pastor Nigel Branken confronted Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille and the Democratic Alliance (DA) leadership on Wednesday night, April 15, he didn’t just ask a question; he exposed the foundational rot of the current political status quo. His intervention highlighted a specific brand of ideological supremacy — one that treats a documented genocide as a ‘complex debate’ rather than a humanitarian catastrophe.
The response Branken received was a masterclass in colonial deflection. Zille’s suggestion that South Africa is too busy with its own ‘diversity project’ to take a stand on Gaza is a betrayal of our history. The South Africa we know today was built on the back of international boycotts and global solidarity. To suggest we are now ‘too busy’ to stand against apartheid elsewhere is to admit that our commitment to human rights ends where Western political interests begin.
Genocide is a ‘too big’ word for ‘Gogo’ Helen
For the establishment, ‘genocide’ is a word that is ‘too big’. Why? Because admitting to genocide carries legal and moral weight. If you acknowledge the reality documented by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars, your ‘neutrality’ becomes indefensible.
Admitting to genocide means you must stop the coal exports that fuel the machinery of occupation. It means you must support the South African ICJ case. It means you must prosecute those South Africans who have traded their humanity for an IDF uniform. By keeping the word ‘small’, politicians keep their complicity ‘big’.
The videos released by Pastor Branken are a microcosm of imperialist tactics. When Branken spoke of starving families and bombed hospitals, he was booed and shouted down by a crowd that prides itself on ‘liberal values’. This is the face of supremacy in the 21st century: it speaks of ‘freedom of speech’ in the boardroom, but resorts to the ‘thuggery of the majority’ the moment its moral authority is challenged.
This reaction proves that the ‘diversity project’ being sold by the DA is a hollow one. It is a project that demands silence in exchange for comfort. It asks us to ignore the extermination of a people so as not to disturb the ‘kumbaya’ of the local elite.
When a word is ‘too big’ for a politician, it’s usually because the truth behind it is too large for their conscience to carry. Pastor Branken’s video didn’t just show a politician being questioned; it showed the moment where ‘liberal’ politics hit a wall of its own making.
Solidarity is not a side issue
As Nelson Mandela famously declared, our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians. The struggle in Gaza is the litmus test of our era. It reveals whether we truly oppose racism, dispossession and apartheid, or whether we only oppose them when it is politically convenient at home.
The global attempts to paint Palestine supporters as ‘Jihadists’ are failing. The fear-mongering is being dismantled by a multi-faith, multi-racial movement that refuses to be intimidated. Pastor Nigel Branken’s courage reminds us that the struggle against Zionist and imperialist supremacy is not a ‘Muslim thing’; it is a human thing.
We must reject the labels of fear and name the truth. There is no middle ground when it comes to genocide. You either stand with the oppressed, or you stand with the machinery of their erasure. It is time to choose.
It’s time to name the genocide. It’s time to name the supremacy. And it’s time to dismantle the agenda that feeds on our silence.

Who is Pastor Nigel Branken?
Shaykh Irshaad Sedick of the Isnad Academy in Cape Town posted the following on his social media account contextualising Pastor Branken’s bold confrontation and the response, particularly of the audience:
This clip has been circulating and I felt compelled to share it with some context.
The man you are about to hear is Pastor Nigel Branken. He is a South African Christian pastor, justice activist, and writer. His ancestry includes slave traders, Dutch colonizers, and the co-founder of the National Party that brought Apartheid into law in 1948. He has spent his life deliberately walking away from that inheritance and toward justice.
Last year, when over 150 Palestinians were detained on a plane at OR Tambo Airport, Pastor Branken was the person given access to that plane on the tarmac. He sat with those families. He spoke to those children. He saw it with his own eyes.
This is the man who walked into a DA meeting and said the following:
I’m one of those people who really don’t like you. I’ve never liked the DA. I find the DA to be the most racist party, full of white supremacy.’The question for me is a big one. How can we even trust you to lead when you can’t acknowledge that there’s a genocide going on in Gaza?
You say we must wait for the ICJ to rule. The ICJ has found that there’s a plausible case of genocide. The ICJ has said we must respect the rights of people. Amnesty International has ruled. Human Rights Watch has ruled. The International Association of Genocide Scholars has ruled. And you continue to deny that there’s a genocide.
Where is your morality? How many more children must die? How many more people must starve before you will stand up with a spine to the immorality of what is happening?
You can support other ICJ cases. You can support sanctions. You can support the stopping of coal exports. You can support the prosecution of people serving in the IDF. That is what you can do, Helen Zille. That is what you can do.
Shame on you.
My thoughts:
When I first saw this clip, what struck me first was not the words, powerful as they are. It was the reaction of the crowd around him.
They barely blinked when he called the DA a racist party. They barely reacted when he used the word white supremacy. But the moment he pushed on Gaza, on the genocide, on the moral obligation to name what is happening and act on it, the room erupted. They did not want him to finish his words.
That reaction tells you more than any policy document ever could.
And then there is who this man is. He is a white South African pastor whose own family helped build Apartheid. He chose a different path. He chose to walk toward the pain rather than away from it. He sat on a plane with Palestinian families at OR Tambo last November and described to the nation what he saw. And then he walked into a DA meeting and said what needed to be said.
I have been talking recently about wahn – love of this world and the dislike of death – as the disease that has paralysed this Ummah. About the managed numbness that keeps so many of us scrolling past the images rather than stopping and absorbing what we are seeing.
Here is a Christian pastor, from an Afrikaner family, with slave traders in his ancestry, who has neither the religious obligation we carry nor the communal wound we share, and he is more uncomfortable in his silence than most of us are.
He chose to speak. In a room that was not his, to a politician who does not represent him, about a people who are not his by blood or by faith. He carried it in anyway.
What exactly is our excuse?
May Allah protect the people of Gaza. May Allah reward every person, of every faith, who speaks when speaking costs something. And may He cure us of the wahn that keeps us comfortable when comfort has become a form of complicity.
