THE global Muslim community is mourning the loss of a beloved scholar and leader, Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi, whose passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
News of his demise on Wednesday April 2, 2025, has elicited an outpouring of heartfelt tributes and condolences from various organisations and esteemed members of the ulama.
Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi, known for his exemplary service and dedication to the way of Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza (RA), held leading positions in several significant institutions.
As the Head of South Africa Dawate Islam and Jamiatul Madina, Mufti Hamidi played a vital role in shaping the minds of his students and followers. He also served as the President of the Sunni Ulama Council Gauteng, Deputy President of the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA), and as the Imam of Sultan Bahu Masjid in Mayfair.
One of Mufti Hamidi’s notable achievements was the publication of Kanzul Imaan, an English translation of the Holy Quran that received widespread acclaim globally.
His contributions and leadership will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Following his passing, heartfelt tributes have been pouring in from across the globe.
Moulana Saleem Zalgoankir, President of the Sunni Ulama Council Cape, expressed his deep sorrow at the passing of Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi, emphasising the significant role he played in promoting Sunniyat.
The Sunni Ulama Council Cape had a longstanding relationship with Mufti Hamidi, dating back to the early 1990s. Moulana Zalgoankir prayed for Allah to grant Mufti Hamidi the highest rank in Jannah and extended his condolences to the family and loved ones left behind.
Similarly, Moulana Sayed Imraan Shah Ziyaee, Principal of the Cape Town Islamic Education Centre (CTIEC) Zia ul Uloom, mourned the loss of a great Aalim, describing Mufti Hamidi as a dedicated servant of Islam. He reflected on the impactful visits made by Mufti Hamidi to CTIEC and prayed for Allah to accept Mufti Hamidi’s years of service and to show mercy upon him in the afterlife.
Mufti Sayed Haroon Al Azhari, President of the Cape Town Ulama Board, reminded the community of the inevitability of death and the trials that come with it, quoting Surah Al-Anbya (The Prophets), verse 35 of the Quran: ‘Every soul must taste death. And We test you with evil and good as a trial, then to Us you will be returned’.
Mufti Sayed Haroon added: ‘The results of our test are by Allah Alone. May Allah grant Mufti’s family, colleagues, and students sabr.’

Hafez Moulana Ismail Hazarvi, Deputy Principal of Darul Uloom Pretoria, reflected on the profound impact that Mufti Hamidi had on the Muslim community. He praised Mufti Hamidi’s efforts in promoting the true creed of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaat. Referencing the hadith, he described the passing of an Islamic scholar as the departure of knowledge from the universe. Moulana Hazarvi prayed for Allah to accept all of Mufti Hamidi’s Deeni services and reward him with the highest place in Jannah.
Moulana Sayed Yusuf, President of the Sunni Ulama Council Gauteng, also paid tribute to Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi, highlighting his significant work and contributions to the Sunni community. He recognised Mufti Hamidi’s role as the first president of the Sunni Ulama Council of Gauteng and his valuable contributions to the broader Muslim community during his tenure as one of the Deputy Presidents of the United Ulama Council South Africa (UUCSA).

Messages of condolences have also been shared internationally by organisations including Habibia Soofie Darbaar in Riverside, Durban, Aleemia Masjid in KwaZulu-Natal, Masjid Jaane Rahmat in Durban, Saaberie Chishty Society in Lenasia, Gauteng, and Darul Uloom Qadria Ghareeb Nawaaz in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. They drew attention to the profound impact Mufti Hamidi had on the global Muslim community.
