SINCE 2016, Awqaf SA has been helping Grade 10-12 learners with their maths exam preparation through their workshops, where problems with the curriculum and past exam papers are dealt with.
The programme is hosted in association with the Department of Basic Education, Iskill and Thread Waqf to assist learners who are struggling to understand maths, as well assist those who have potential in maths.
Future careers, including STEM (Science Technology and Medicine), all require an understanding of maths.
But the reality is that South African learners perform poorly in maths when compared to learners from first world countries.
The workshops are hosted in May in preparation for the July exams, and in August in preparation for the September-October finals.
Last year, these interactive and engaging sessions reached 54 300 YouTube views where up to 13 000 learners were registered on the day.
A competition was launched recently to gauge the performance of the participants and to acknowledge academic excellence among the top performers. Juwayriya Sayanwala, a grade 12 learner and workshop participant scored 98% to take honours, while Anele Mofokeng improved from 74% to 85%. This bears testament that learners have benefited from this intervention.
