In a united effort to address the growing demand for blood, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), in partnership with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), is urging South Africans to become first-time blood donors on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 09:00 to 16:00.
This one-day drive aims to recruit 800 new blood donors in an effort to grow a sustainable blood donor base and equally raise awareness about the critical need for regular blood donation.
The WCBS hope to recruit 300 new donors in the Western Cape and the SANBS hope to recruit 500 new donors.
It’s a powerful opportunity to bring along friends, family, colleagues, or classmates who haven’t donated blood before. First-time donors are the focus, and this campaign aims to make that first step easy, welcoming, and life-changing.
Both blood Services anticipate blood stock shortages leading up to the winter months. Blood stock levels tend to decline during the Easter period as well as school holidays as donors make their way to their holiday destination and blood donation might then not always be top priority.
‘This is more than just a one-day campaign, it’s a national call to action. We’re encouraging every donor to bring someone who’s never donated before. If everyone brings just one new person, we could double our impact in a single day,’ says Marike Carli, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at WCBS.

Donors can visit any WCBS or SANBS blood donation clinic across the country to participate:

About the Western Cape Blood Service:
The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is a non-profit regional health organisation, dedicated to collecting blood from voluntary blood donors, and providing the safest blood products and efficient service to the community, while operating at the highest professional and ethical standards and remaining a viable organisation. WCBS work without prejudice to supply safe blood and blood products to all communities in the region, from Cape Town all the way up to George. It’s our goal to deliver a world-class blood service in the Western Cape.
About the South African National Blood Service:
SANBS is an independent non-profit organisation and one of the leaders in the discipline of blood transfusion. SANBS operates in eight of the nine provinces in South Africa (with the exception of the Western Cape, which is serviced by the Western Cape Blood Service). It also provides crucial support to countries in the SADC region. SANBS supplies over one million blood products annually and is rated among the top blood services in the world. This pedigree comes from world-class testing and collection protocols, which ensure that the blood, which is transfused, is always of top quality. The blood is processed into its constituent components; red blood cells, plasma and platelets therefore in principle a single blood donation can save up to three lives.
